With the introductions of the Nikon D4, and then all the hoopla about the D800 and D800E, it seems that Canon owners just are not feeling the love lately even though Canon recently upgraded the 5D Mark II to the Mark III. With all the attention the D800 is getting, the 5D Mark III seems to be a minor upgrade, right? Wrong. Canon offers us some significant upgrades to tempt us with.
DIGIC 5+ processor. This processor is 6 times faster than the DIGIC 5 processor and 17 times faster than the DIGIC 4 processor of the 5D Mark II. This speed gives us more features without slowing down the camera’s performance.
New Sensor. The new full frame sensor features 22.3 MP, which will provide more resolution with finer detail.
Frame Rate. The 5D Mark III gets a nice upgrade to 6 fps over the 3.9fps of the 5D Mark II. At 6 fps you can shoot 18 RAW images or over 16,000 JPEGS.
AF System. The 5D Mark III utilizes the 1Dx’s 61 point wide area AF System. Of the 61 points, 41 are the cross-type and 5 dual cross-type. This system will provide State-of-the-Art performance.
Metering. The new metering system features 63 zone dual layer sensor that is linked to each of the AF points. The AF information is also used in the exposure calculations along with color and luminance to give highly accurate exposures.
HDR. The addition of the DIGIC 5+ processor gives us in-camera HDR capability. The camera combines 3 exposures to allow photographer’s to capture more information in high contrast situations.
ISO Range. The native setting of ISO 100 has been retained while the upper limit has been pushed to ISO 25,600.
Noise. With the new processor we also get less noise. This becomes more apparent at ISOs over 800 when compared to the 5D Mark II.
The Rest. Also improved is the monitor. The 1Dx’s Clear View II 3.2 inch 1,040,000 pixel screen is used. AVI video output is added. Dual memory card slots (1- UDMA 7 compatible CF card slot and 1 SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot). 100% Viewfinder. 14 bit analog to digital conversion and 14 bit DIGIC 5+ digital imaging processing. GPS comes to the 5D Mark III via the GPS Receiver GP-E2.
Pricing. The Canon 5D Mark III sells for $3499.95 for the body and $4299.95 for the kit that includes the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
Improvements over the 5D Mark II offer Canon users a significant performance and feature upgrades in the mid-sized full frame category. I don’t know about you, but I want one!
